Default Torch Wanted: Minor or Bobcat

I'm a newbie to lampworking. I'm looking to buy a torch. I learned on a Minor, but have also tried a Bobcat and liked them both. I recently borrowed a Hot Head so I now have something to practice on, but would like to upgrade.

    Thanks,

    Barbara,

Did you want a new or used model? The Minors are great and the bobcat is similar. I suppose it's what you want to do with the torch in the long run. I use a Lynx and LOVE it- although I learned on a Minor, so there you go!

    Good luck!

Well, ideally I'd love to get a used torch that someone isn't using anymore at a savings from a new torch. I am on a bit of a budget, so the better the deal, the more glass I can ultimately buy!

    Barbara-
Minors seldomly seem to be for sale used. They are such great all-around torches, that even when people move up to another torch, they often keep the minor.
But I do know how the budget thing goes starting out and it is worth a try here.

Your most important investments, Barbara, will be your torch and your kiln. The $160 or so for a new minor is worth every penny!! Just NIKE!!! (DO IT!!) The sooner you get going in your beadmaking, the sooner you will find the excitment of it all. It's time to start MELTING those purdy color rods!

Thanks for the "encouragement". I did borrow a Hot Head and some glasses, so I'm starting to finally move forward. Made some beads this week. I was a tad rusty, but it was fun. Found someone nearby to batch anneal them for me until I get a kiln, so I'm all set there also. Also got the glass storage system somewhat organized - Finally found some thin-wall PVC and got it cut and into empty kitty litter buckets (I have TONS of those lying around the basement!) And the mandrels have been cut and ground (made my own from welding rod).

Good for you, Barbara! I'm glad all is working out for you. Honestly, just make the investment in the torch. You're covered for the other more pricey stuff now, and your husband is going to be great help in all your other set up needs. Rusty?! Not to worry, ALL of us go thru those periods, and always will . But in the end, it's like that saying goes about riding a bike . You GO, Barb!!

Yes! Ofilia should be the spokeswoman for the Minor torch! How's that baby of yours doing by the way?!!!

The minor is a good investment- it's like the Hondas in the car world- reliable and rarely gives you any trouble!!

"She" still be sad.....I'm too chicken (bawk-bawk-bawk!!) to take it apart. In the meantime, my Cheetah and I are getting to know each other a little better.

The Minor has brought me more than 7 years of great torching, pushing it's limits. I'd still be on it, if I hadn't had that accident:>(
