Janz,

LOL @ Homer Simpson... Good to know I'm not the only adult who watches The Simpsons! That WAS a pretty good episode, too.

D'oh!

Fugu is a type of puffer fish. The liver secretes a deadly toxin. I think even if the fish is cleaned properly, a trace of the toxin remains in the fish, so that people who eat it get a little tingly sensation or numbness. It's outrageously expensive, which I guess is part of the thrill. Not my idea of a great time.

Ricin is a poison made from the castor bean. In 1978, a Bulgarian dissident in London was assassinated with ricin. Someone jabbed him with an umbrella that was rigged to insert a tiny pellet containing ricin under his skin.

Curare is arrow-poison, and strychnine is an old favorite among fans of mystery stories, although there don't seem to be many real-life murders committed with strychnine.

The things you learn by spending too much time watching the Discovery Channel . . .

There are some very poisonous beans that are sometimes used as beads. Take a look at this, and don't let your toddlers suck on any suspicious necklaces:

I picked up a bottle of Absinthe (There are only about 12 left in Quebec), I wanted to check out the ingrdients but they only say "Absinthe herbs essence and infusions" not what % of which herbs are in here. oh well.

I also found out it was never banned in Canada cause Britain never banned it...bless the queen!

Anyhow, the funniest thing, I found a bottle that was boxed, it came with a special spoon to melt my sugar cubes on and guess who was on the box?

Why, Van Gogh of course.

Ha ha ha.

Now Janna, don't go "checking it out" TOO thoroughly !

That's funny about the boxed Van Gogh "kit" sample. I'd be particularly concerned if it came with
a shot gun . Your little box sounds like a very intriguing curio sake item. If I hear about you going out and picking amanita (sp?) mushrooms, I WILL start to worry about you !

Janz,
I think you should make a bead under the influence of the absinthe and post it here for us to see.

and I don't understand this, please explain? Why the sugar cubes?..and why melt them?

>Anyhow, the funniest thing, I found a bottle that was boxed, it came with a special spoon to melt my sugar cubes on and guess who was on the box?<

and btw, was the charity for tigers auction a success? Will you post any tiger bead pictures?

I would NEVER do such a thing as make a bead while "under the influence"! lol! good god, I'd burn the house down in a minute! It's that whole drinking and driving thing all over.

Your supposed to melt a sugar cube into the drink to make it taste nice, there's special spoon you rest over the top of your glass, put the cube on and

a) you can "drip" ice water over it till the cube dissolves
or
b) dip the cube in the absinthe, then light the cube on fire to carmelize the sugar.

It's like a ritual...it's fun, thinking that so many years ago people did the same.

Thanks for remembering my tiger project. It's gonna be pushed back a bit...I have a bunch of pendants I wanted to put in, but I can't use my kiln right now....
I live right at the bottom of Mount-royal and all the spring run-off is soaking my rock wall and the floor of my studio. My kiln is up 3 feet on a cement platform, but I'd rather not operate it with all the dampness.

I will show everyone the link when I get it up though.

I think they were using opium in those days. And laudanum(SP?) which was another opiate - morphine maybe?

Ofilia,

personally, I prefer the label "Classy Sophisticate" to "Bead Beatnik". It's much more in tune with my shy and retiring persona.
