Default What is in \"A Name\"?

The subject of "a Name bead" came up in another thread. This topic is interesting to me. The subject is somewhat peculiar and multifaceted.

Did you know that Vincent Van Gough only sold ONE painting before his death? Did you know that the highest paid at auction painting was a Van Gough? It's a shame that he did not live to see his "acceptance" and value of his work/himself. One thing that Van Gough did do was paint with abandon! He didn't care if it was not the style of the day, or the colors of the norm. He painted and drew prolifically. This became his legacy.

Some people are trail blazers or pioneers of their field. Some have to try EXTRA hard to achieve certain successes. NEVER presume that "a Name" person did not have to do their share of effort to get that recognition. There is no "overnight" success on a wide scope in any field. At least not any that could be worth it's salt.

Everything we do in life HAS to be a lesson learned. A stepping stone. If we all had Superman (Wonderwoman) capes, yea, it would be cool, but I have not seen any in the stores . So we have to learn to earn and accept our lessons. Make goals, many of them! Set them HIGHER AND HIGHER each time.

Believe that you have something to offer the field you are partaking in or be content to be a follower. There is nothing wrong with that. Be an explorer. Seek out the childlike curiousity in YOU! Study. Step outside yourself and look around. See other venues that can give inspiration and breath to what you do. Do things that provoke your emotions to become a part of the process- at least in artistic venues, this is the core (in my humble belief).

Above all, <font color="purple">BELIEVE IN YOURSELF !

Ah, eloquent and thought-provoking Lady O: How beautifully stated! I only have a moment, but I am reminded of the story that Ernest Hemingway received 200 rejection notices from magazines and book publishers before his first written piece was published. I hear tell that he papered the wall of a room with them...

Ofilia,

Sometimes I loose sight of the reason I do this. (It's usually around Christmas time when I'm bogged down with my big shows, stressed out, and trying to earn a little extra $$$ for gifts -- mini-burnout, I guess.) I forget that this whole glass thing started with me because beads make me so very HAPPY. I don't usually make them to sell, I make them because I LOVE them so... the colors, the sparkle, their perfect weight in your hand....

I guess that's kind of silly, but it works for me. When I feel bummed out, I go out and work, or look at (LOL, fondle ) my bead collection, and it makes me feel... better. Beads as therapy?

Thank you so much for reminding me why I do this, and how much I truly love glass. I am favorite-ing this thread, in case I need another reminder.

Yay, beads!

ofilia,

you always make me feel good, and this last post is no exception.

i tend not to like 'nice' people. succinctly: those who cannot understand criticism (positive or negative) about their beliefs. i do not like people who paste on a happy face and refuse to consider things deeply. you, my dear, are different (or at least you *seem* different ). hard to tell online, but i feel that i'd like you if i met you in person. you have a consistently good attitude which seems to come from looking at life with clear eyes, and i find that admirable.

that's my story &amp; i'm sticking to it. thank you for being such a positive presence on this forum.

btw, have you read any ursula k. leguin? (i'm straying away from the original topic, i know.) i have decided, after much careful consideration and many years, that she is my favorite writer. she thinks and feels deeply and writes with grace, truth, strong emotion and intellect. i think you would enjoy her work.

Hi Elfin! Thanks for the kudos. Should we ever meet, I HOPE you would like me ...

Frankly, in person I'm rather quiet. In a crowd, I'd rather be the wall flower or the fly on the wall person. As I've grown older I'm learning to be more comfortable with myself. I've learned certain things about myself haven't changed as much as I'd like them to. So I accept things be as they may be. In getting older I've learned I don't have time to BS around about things. I hate falseness. I love being creative and being around others who also exercise their talents.

Until we meet, it's my pleasure......

PS: I don't read much, (I'm a slow reader !) but I will certainly look up Ursula Leguin. Thanks for the tip. When I read things I enjoy, it's like delving into the pages and the mind of the author, isn't it?

Morning everyone! I must start with apologies! First of all to Elif and van Gogh for misspelling their
names ! I get to typing fast and forget to double check some things.

Yes, I DO deliberately try to keep things on a positive note here on the Forum . The reason is that lampworking has been very revealing to me in many perspectives and I feel I owe it back, both to the art form and to ISGB for being the catalyst of this wonderful resource. Besides, don't you agree there is enough "negativity" in the world already ?! Why have it here ?

Amen Ofilia. Although I have never had the good fortune to meet you in person I feel I know you from the forum. I think you are a neat lady and please keep bringing your Good Karma into our lives.

P.S. I fell in love with your fish the moment I saw them in Cindy's book. IMHO you have taken what might be considered a cliché in bead making and elevated it to works of art.

Yes, I have felt the same way for sometime. I am mostly a lurker, too new to feel that anything I have to say is noteworthy, but I must say that Ofilia's (sp?) fish beads have been a constant sorce of inspiration and a sort of comfort, to know that color blending of this magnitude is possible. Thanks much for the inspiration!

WOW! You guys are REALLY something!! Don't you guys realize that in all actuality YOU are MY inspiration?!?! I need to give credit where credit is due. It's all about give and take energy.
No (wo)man is an island, right ?

BTW, to show my appreciation for all your warmth, I am going to add to my donations for the upcoming Gathering silent auction, the little green fish that Kate was so nice to post in the "techniques" area the other day!

Thanks guys,

Ofilia
