Black veining Or web effect

Can someone explain how to get a black veining or web like effect on beads. I'm trying to simulate something like turquoise but I've yet to make it look right. I found some beads on ebay that have the effect on them done in both violet and turquoise but as many as I've made I just can't seem to get it right.

Hi Lori,

Two guesses:

1. with alabaster (white or yellow, I think) veining will come with 'overheating' but can be a nice effect.

2. I get a turquoise effect with copper leaf burned off from white, pink, or other light colors. Depending on how it's wrapped, amount of overlap, etc. will be a varied effect.

This looks like an intense black effect to me. To do, pull a thin (and I mean thin, as in almost hair thin...you really don't need much) stringer of intense black. Make base bead and apply stringer where you want it. Then turn the propane down to make an oxidizing flame, and heat the heck out of it. The intense black will start to break up into a web-like pattern. Depending on the size of your bead, this may not happen until you are on the verge of losing control over the bead because it is so hot.

just a note - i tried this technique on my HH while a friend was over using my Lynx...the HH doesn't really get the black to 'bleed' enough, whereas the Lynx (or any oxy propane torch) got it to work just great...

thanks Elizabeth. After hearing your explantion I think My problem is too much Stringer. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

This isn't meant to be ugly, but if there is one thing that makes me want to lose my mind about making beads, it is hearing someone say you cant' do something on a hot head. If I had a dollar for every time I have heard this about a technique I can do I would be making a whole lot more than I am on Ebay. I did two of the web affect beads on my hot head today.

Sing out, sister! I also get a little twitch at the "I guess you can't do this on a HotHead." So many HotHead users are newbies, and what they can't do is because of lack of technique, not the torch.

I hate to ask a dumb question but here goes---how do you get an oxidizing flame on a HH? Do we just turn it up more and work hotter?
