Window beads

Where can I get a tutorial of window beads? Or do you now of a book that explains it?

Hi Lina

There are different types of "window beads":
- Beads with a colored core, heavy encasing and a thin coating with an opaque layer are ground untill the outer coating is opened and shows the decorated core. Polish well!
- The beads as discribed abouve don't get a whole cover with the opaque coating and the core shows through the uncovered sections.
- With a ;-) they are square with a wooden frame and curtains and a cat sits between the flower pots...

I´m talking about the one where you make a round bead, and then (guessing here) you cut (?) two sides of the glass off, so you get like a window... Maybe it´s called something else... Saw something about using shards...

I´ve seen pics, but don´t have any to show.

Hi Lina, do you have access to a lapidary grinder? There are many on the market in all price ranges. Some of those windows are cut or sawed away with a wet saw, but some it's just simply grinding down on a diamond wheel.

You need to have different grades of abrasives to bring it back to that shiny surface, but the 'surprise' you can reveal inside your bead can be really awesome!

Good luck persuing this style. I admire all the diverse directions you are exploring in you discovery of lamwpork! Kudos, to you , Lina!

Have you ever seen Andrew Brown's work or Harold Williams Cooney. They have really mastered the lapidary techniques.
Look them up on Glassartist.org.
I took a class with them! Lots of good input!

Ofilia- I feel like I want to absorb as much info as possible, I have no limits when it comes to wanting to try something new. Can one get addicted to lampworking? Well, I´m going there! And have a wonderful partner who supports med in every way he can (except cleaning more, that would give me more time to lampwork ).

I´m also looking into electroforming. And am thinking of making jewelery components in Pewter... What can I say, I´ve always worked a lot of different materials, why stop now

Lina, you are such a jewel! I love your youthfull entheusiasm! I hope you can look into coming to one of our Gatherings and get to see all the wonderful work our members make. It's such an eclectic group. You should inquire into the International scholar ship program to help with the expenses. Forgive me if I'm repeating myself, but I really enjoy your presence ;>)! As a side note, the technical vendors will keep you wishing you had an endless pocketbook!

Lina - I too wondered what you meant about "window" beads. I have included a chapter on faceting/grinding in a book I'm working on so I would be happy to try to answer any questions.
